Association of Zoos and Aquariums

Roger German, Chair of the Aquarium Affairs Committee for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums spoke with Lawrence Gunther on the Blue Fish Radio Show about the origins of public aquariums and how their mission has changed through the years. Roger believes the future of aquariums is vital to informing and equipping the next generation of aquatic stewards.

Roger explained to Lawrence that aquariums will continue to move beyond simply showcasing exotic and regional fish and mammals, and will increasingly demonstrate leadership both regionally and globally in a variety of areas. His hope is that aquariums will become both tools for educating the public about the latest scientific findings, and to engage the public both pre and post visit. Increasingly, aquariums hope to serve as an on-going source of information and inspiration so people are empowered to become volunteers and stewards of their local aquatic ecosystems.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is a globally recognized brand representing the best of the world’s aquariums and zoos. The mission of the Association is to provide its members with the services, high standards and best practices needed to be leaders and innovators in animal care, wildlife conservation and science, conservation education, the guest experience, and community engagement.
