Blue Fish Canada developed a “Usability and Accessibility Assessment Tool” to evaluate shoreline access locations and kayak, canoe and boat launches. the Tool covers a variety of attributes such as the level of access provided to docks and their usability, the slope and material used on paths leading to shorelines, the amenities people can expect to find when visiting a site, and much more. The tool assists anglers and others to choose sites that best suit their accessibility requirements and desired use based on their personal comfort and abilities.
The Usability and Accessibility Assessment Tool is not meant to assess outdoor amenities for compliance with barrier-free design standards. Instead, it provides numerous assessment checkpoints that cover a variety of accessibility and usability variables so people intending to visit a site have a good understanding of what to expect when they arrive.
The Blue Fish Canada team works with numerous academic institutions, outdoor businesses, government departments, disability groups, and angler associations to improve access for people of all abilities and user requirements. The goal is to assist those responsible for creating and managing public and private outdoor spaces to maximise the accessibility and usability of such spaces.
