Taking a big picture approach is exactly what Christopher Bos and the Anglers Coalition is doing with their plans for introducing millions of Chinook salmon into the Pacific. Tired of watching their ecosystem slowly deteriorate due to a host of documented pressures, this group of concerned citizens is taking action. Their goal, to introduce enough salmon into the Pacific Ocean off the south end of Vancouver Island to ensure an ample supply of food for the three area Orca pods, J, K and L. They understand that if the apex predator in the system is doing well, then the entire ecosystem is strong. Listen to this week’s Blue fish Radio interview with the Coalition’s president, Christopher Bos, as we hear first-hand about their plans to bring about positive change.

We were able to produce 52 new Blue fish Radio episodes in 2016, and are planning another 52 for 2017. This season closer is a collection of sage advice provided by some of the greatest anglers I’ve had the privilege of knowing. It’s advice we all need to reflect on as its not normally what you read or hear on TV. It makes sense though.

Their economic independence means no added cost or beholding to producers, processors or retailers, and a free service for everyone involved with seafood from ship to plate. Listen as Kurtis Hayne, the Sustainable Seafood Market Analyst for SeaChoice, discusses how Canada is on the way to becoming 100% sustainable, but still has some serious heavy lifting ahead if we are going to get there before it’s too late for certain popular seafood choices that have yet to make it off of the “red” list of unsustainably harvested fish.

Lawrence and Anastasia discuss the importance of using protection zones prudently, the need to include both native and local voices and knowledge at decision making tables, why ministerial discretion needs to be transparent, and the importance of putting back safeguards that were removed from the Fisheries Act in 2012.

As the Executive Director of Oceana Canada, Josh Laugrehn has a lot to say about the state of Canada’s commercial fisheries, and it’s not that much different than what was recently reported by the WWF. With the longest coastline in the world and a responsibility that includes 2.67 million square kilometers of ocean, this is serious business. We use to be the 7th greatest commercial fish harvester in the world, but we’ve slipped to 21st. Are we on our way back? Listen as Lawrence and Josh discuss progress, challenges and what we still need to see happen before Canada can hold it’s head high as a sustainable commercial fishing nation.

Turns out Mohawk fishers shared in common with non-native fishers the challenge of learning to use prudently modern fish harvesting technologies. Following sound advice from scientists and practicing traditional harvesting techniques is a lesson we can all learn from, and Lawrence does just that as he catches his personal best Smallmouth Bass.
